Misericordia University has decided to go a bit beyond the usual practice of having experts discuss a topic for the May 10 “Real-Life Solutions to Working with Clients with Fluency Disorders” symposium.
Jim Muth told the story of how they began blowing glass with waste vegetable oil in the first place (normally you use gas). "We had some folks show up at our place with some waste vegetable oil," says Muth, "wondering if we could power our furnaces with it." The team wasn’t sure if this was possible, but it was free fuel, so they decided to give it a try. They weren’t expecting it to burn so hot though, and their first attempt was met with a visit from the fire department. Eventually, the team built their own burner, and then their own furnace that could handle the extra heat. "A lot of people told us it wouldn’t work," says Muth, "Obviously they were wrong." Is it the way of the future? I’m not sure, but Muth definitely thinks it could be.
