The toolmaking unit of German multinational automaker Volkswagen has opened a new advanced 3D printing center. Located in the automotive hub of Wolfsburg, Germany, the facility occupies 3,100 m² of floor space, and houses a range of cutting edge metal additive manufacturing machines.

We recently spent some quality time with the new Jeep Gladiator out in California, where we put the off-roader through its paces. Our conclusion? It’s primarily a Jeep Wrangler with a bed, but we did point out some differences in handling, especially when tackling roads and trails less traveled. The folks at Edmunds took the Wrangler-versus-Gladiator comparison even further, showcasing a pair of Rubicon models that even wore the same coat of paint. We were very impressed with Draper’s 3M Telescopic Washing Brush, for a number of reasons. It’s the only brush on test that can extend to a maximum length of three metres, making it perfect for cleaning garage roofs or the top of a caravan. There are three tubular sections, and the middle setting of 2.1m is enough for almost any car. Weighing 1.4kg and measuring 1.3m when in its most compact setting, it’s easy to use and wieldy enough, plus it’s well built. To top it off, it’s also one of the cheapest brushes on test.

Like TNGA-C platform mates Toyota C-HR and Corolla hatchback, the confining cabin limits the 2019 Lexus UX’s usability. Rear-seat accommodations are claustrophobic; forget putting humans back there if someone tall is sitting up front. Even with the rear seats folded, the cargo space is abysmal; it’s impractical for anything but the week’s groceries. You can’t even place large items vertically into the rear cargo area because the rear window cuts into the cabin.

MX3D’s 3D-printed, stainless steel bridge — designed by Joris Laarman Lab — is scheduled to be installed this year across one of Amsterdam’s oldest canals, Oudezijds Achterburgwal. The 10,000-pound, 12.5-meter-long bridge took six months to build using four industrial robots and has been undergoing structural integrity testing. Construction equipment has also been the beneficiary of 3D printing technology, as Volvo revealed last year that it had started to print aftermarket parts for heavy equipment. The manufacturer said this method of manufacturing would be particularly useful in providing parts for older machines no longer in production.
